Serena Silliker is a prime example of one of the many women at J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI) who is breaking down barriers within the typically male-dominated pulp and paper industry.

"When I first entered the industry, most of the women I met were in supporting roles. Over the past few years, I have noticed an increase in the number of women in leadership positions. It's inspiring to see female technical managers and superintendents,” said Serena.

Serena joined the team at Lake Utopia Paper in 2016 after completing a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and a Master of Science in Engineering, both from the University of New Brunswick. In September 2020, she was promoted to her current role as the Senior Process Engineer at Irving Tissue where she is responsible for the sustainable operations of the mill.

“I'm happy to work for a company that supports my professional growth and challenges me to become a better leader every day," says Serena. “JDI has supported me in breaking barriers and has shown me there is a seat at the table for young women in the pulp and paper industry.”
