PSSMA Announces 2023 Safety Award Winners

COOPERSBURG, PA (May 23, 2024) – The Paper Shipping Sack Manufacturers’ Association (PSSMA) has announced the winners of its annual Safety Awards Program for paper shipping sack manufacturing plants in 2023.

These awards were presented to company representatives at the PSSMA’s Production Managers’ Seminar, held May 10, 2024 at the Hilton Vancouver Washington. PSSMA Chairman Dale Stevens, Hood Packaging, noted the industry’s safety incidence rate of 2.53 reported for 2023 was one of the lowest achieved in recent years.

The Best Annual Safety Experience awards were determined on the basis of lowest total recordable incidence rate in each of the four annual manhour categories in 2023.  The paper shipping sack manufacturing plants that achieved the Best Annual Safety Experience in 2023 in the man-hour categories shown are:

Less than 150,000 manhours – A Tie: Bag Supply Company, Moody, Alabama Plant; Central Bag Company, Leavenworth, Kansas Plant 

150,000 to 215,000 manhours – A 4-Way Tie: Hood Packaging Corporation, Hanford, California Plant; Mondi Bags USA, Romeoville, Illinois Plant; Mondi Bags USA, Wellsburg, West Virginia Plant;  ProAmpac, Omaha, Nebraska Plant

215,000 to 300,000 manhours – Mondi Bags USA, Eastman, Georgia Plant

Over 300,000 manhours – Mondi Bags USA, Salt Lake City, Utah Plant

The Greatest Annual Safety Improvement awards were determined on the basis of greatest decrease in total recordable incidence rates reported in 2023 compared to 2022. The paper shipping sack manufacturing plants that achieved the Greatest Annual Safety Improvementin 2022 in the man-hour categories shown are:

Less than 150,000 manhours – Portco Packaging, Toppenish, Washington Plant 

150,000 to 215,000 manhours – Langston Companies, Peoria, Illinois Plant 

215,000 to 300,000 manhours – ProAmpac, Kansas City, Missouri Plant

Over 300,000 manhours – The Robinette Company, Piney Flats, Tennessee Plant

The following six paper shipping sack manufacturing plants were recognized for having zero recordable incidence rates in 2023:

  • Bag Supply Company, Moody, Alabama Plant
  • Central Bag Company, Leavenworth, Kansas Plant 
  • ProAmpac, Omaha, Nebraska Plant
