In an era where sustainability is becoming increasingly paramount, Tesco, one of the UK's leading supermarket chains, is pioneering a groundbreaking initiative that transforms ordinary cardboard into luxurious toilet rolls and kitchen towels

This innovative process not only reduces waste but also offers consumers eco-friendly alternatives without compromising on quality.

Tesco's collaboration with WEPA, a leading tissue paper manufacturer, has resulted in the development of a revolutionary technology capable of converting tonnes of recycled cardboard into soft, absorbent paper products. This breakthrough comes at a time when the demand for home delivery services has surged, leading to a surplus of cardboard packaging.

Philip Banks, Tesco's Household Category Director, highlights the significance of this initiative, stating, "The explosion of home deliveries since the pandemic has created an abundance of recyclable cardboard boxes right on our doorstep. The manufacturing process our supplier has developed, that turns them into incredibly soft toilet roll and kitchen towel, allows us to create a second, sustainable use for them that couldn’t be more different!”

The process begins by collecting used cardboard, including delivery boxes and corrugated card from supermarkets, which is then combined with other recycled paper sources. This mixture is pulped and cleaned, creating fibres suitable for paper production. Notably, the innovative pulp production process consumes less water, chemicals, and energy compared to traditional methods of sourcing raw materials from trees.

What sets Tesco's recycled paper products apart is their natural beige color, as they are unbleached, eliminating the need for harsh chemicals. This commitment to sustainability extends further as all Tesco Own Brand toilet roll and kitchen towel products are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified, ensuring responsible forestry practices.

The new range includes 100% Recycled Brown Kitchen Towel, Luxury Soft 100% Recycled Brown Toilet Tissue in both 4-roll and 6-long roll variants. These products offer consumers a guilt-free option, allowing them to make environmentally conscious choices without sacrificing comfort or quality.

Launching initially in 100 Tesco Extra stores across the country, Tesco plans to expand the availability of these eco-friendly products further. By incorporating recycled cardboard into their own-brand offerings, Tesco demonstrates its commitment to sustainability while encouraging consumers to embrace more eco-friendly alternatives in their daily lives.

This initiative not only reduces the environmental footprint associated with cardboard waste but also sets a precedent for other retailers to explore innovative solutions for sustainable product development. Tesco's endeavor represents a significant step towards a greener future, where resourcefulness and environmental responsibility go hand in hand with consumer convenience and comfort.
