Seal attests to the Company's environmental, social and ethical responsibility

Santa Catarina, April 3, 2024 -  Klabin, Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of packaging paper and sustainable paper packaging solutions, has obtained one more certification in its forest management areas in Santa Catarina. After undergoing the certification-related audits, the forestry scope received the PEFC (Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) seal,  considered the world’s preeminent forest certification system (PEFC/28-22-15).

Klabin and its Special Purpose Companies (SPE) Aroeira, Guaricana, Pinheiro and Manacá – Grupo Aroeira (PEFC/28-22-16) obtained the seal after an audit process that involved the collection of samples from the field and documentation prepared by a multidisciplinary team.

The new certification covers the entire supply chain and guarantees the traceability of raw material, thus validating the Company's commitment to responsible and sustainable forest management, environment conservation and social and ethical values. PEFC is a global alliance that recognizes national certification systems, aligned with best forest protection practices.

“This certification is a guarantee of the sustainability standards that characterize the wood produced by Klabin.  In some countries, it is a commercially required document and, therefore, directly influences the company's export possibilities, while also serving as one more testament to our good practices”, says Mireli Moura Pitz Floriani, Environmental Responsibility coordinator at Klabin.

Klabin’s partnerships with SPEs represent a business model in which a new entity is created for a specific purpose, whose activities are restricted and which could have a predetermined term of existence. When the Company adopted this model in Santa Catarina, forestry certification became an essential requirement, considering that the company uses wood produced by these SPEs. “We only work with and sell products manufactured from certified raw materials and other controlled sources, and hence environmental certifications such as this confirm that our raw material sources are economically viable, socially fair and environmentally correct”, says Mireli.

The PEFC certification considers Brazilian forest management standards established by the Brazilian Technical Standards Association (ABNT). With this seal in Santa Catarina, Klabin further raises its credibility among clients who demand proof of origin of forestry products with this certification.  Other states where the company’s forest management units are located already have PEFC.
