Strong net sales growth in the quarter, margins still impacted by high costs
West Fraser today reported results for the fourth quarter and full year of 2018. Ted Seraphim, CEO of West Fraser stated, “The fourth quarter was challenging on a number of fronts including soft lumber markets, difficult weather conditions in the U.S. South, production curtailments in British Columbia as well as planned and unplanned downtime.
Domtar Corporation (NYSE: UFS) (TSX: UFS) today reported net earnings of $87 million ($1.38 per share) for the fourth quarter of 2018 compared to net earnings of $99 million ($1.57 per share) for the third quarter of 2018 and a net loss of $386 million ($6.16 per share) for the fourth quarter of 2017. Sales for the fourth quarter of 2018 were $1.4 billion.
MEMPHIS, Tenn., Jan. 31, 2019 -- International Paper (NYSE: IP) today reported fourth quarter 2018 net earnings attributable to International Paper of $316 million ($0.78 per diluted share) compared with $562 million ($1.37 per diluted share) in the third quarter of 2018 and net earnings of $1.5 billion ($3.50 per diluted share) in the fourth quarter of 2017.
Commenting on the results, Sappi Chief Executive Officer Steve Binnie said: "I am very satisfied that we have delivered results for the year in line with that of the prior year, notwithstanding the downtime related to the completion of several large strategic growth projects. These projects facilitated a further shift in the product mix of the group towards higher margin and growth segments."
