FPInnovations’ popular Pulp, Paper, and Bioproducts Course took place from October 24 to 28, and this year, participants had the choice of attending in person or online.
In total, 36 participants benefitted from the 31 lecture sessions offered. Onsite attendees also engaged in live laboratory demonstrations and tours of the laboratory and pilot plant, while online participants experienced these via video.
Participants included researchers, engineers, and managers, as well as other professionals from industry and government agencies. Whether they attended in person or online, all participants learned from FPInnovations’ experts as they shared their invaluable knowledge on a wide range of topics, including fibre supply, pulp and paper manufacturing processes, tissue and packaging, new bioproducts, and the current hot topic—decarbonization for pulp and paper mills.
As a bonus, both in-person and on-line participants have access to the recorded sessions until December 31 (available to course participants only). They also received a certificate after completing the course.

The course is an excellent opportunity for technical personnel to get a high-level overview of all things pulp and paper. It was eye-opening to learn about the downstream processes and associated complexity that transform this precursor into value-added products such as paper, containerboard, and hygiene/sanitary items. Hearing experts speak about possible industry transformations and bioproducts that are being researched was also fascinating. The technical lectures were supplemented with demonstrations and tours of FPInnovations’ pilot facilities, where participants were able to reinforce what they learned from class sessions. As a junior process engineer working in the pulp and paper industry, I found FPInnovations’ Pulp, Paper, and Bioproducts Course to be highly informative and well structured. The course covered a wide range of topics from fibre supply and wood chemistry to various final products, and offered a comprehensive overview of pulping and papermaking processes. All course instructors have years of experience and expertise in their respective fields, and I learned a great deal from interacting with them throughout the course.
